Driving to Puerto Penasco
Directions from Phoenix
- Take Interstate 10 West from Phoenix
- Take exit #112 South on State Highway 85 towards Gila Bend
- Drive through Gila Bend until you arrive at the McDonald’s
- Turn right just before McDonald’s, following the sign that says “Mexico/S R 85 South”
- Take 85 South through the town of Ajo and continue through the town of Why
- Arrive at Lukeville, along the international border
- Cross the border into Sonoyta, Sonora
- Continue South in Sonoyta arriving at a three-way stop
- Bear left towards Caborca
- At the split in the road, bear right, which will be the road to Puerto Penasco
- Continue through town, staying on this road, which will lead you directly to Rocky Point
- Puerto Penasco is approximately 60 miles down the road from Sonoyta
- Once in Rocky Point, either follow the numerous Tessoro signs marking various routes to our sales office, or continue straight down the road into town
- As you travel down Blvd. Benito Juarez, you will come to an intersection with a large sign reading “Las Conchas”
- Turn left at that intersection, heading East down Blvd. Fremont
- Approximately 1/4 mile past the four-way stop, you will find the Tessoro sales office on the left, in Plaza del Sol
Directions from Tucson
- Take State Route 86 West from Tucson to Why
- Once in Why, take State Route 85 South to Lukeville and the border
- Cross the border into Sonoyta, Sonora
- Continue South in Sonoyta arriving at a three-way stop
- Bear left towards Caborca
- At the split in the road, bear right, which will be the road to Puerto Penasco
- Continue through town, staying on this road, which will lead you directly to Rocky Point
- Puerto Penasco is approximately 60 miles down the road from Sonoyta
- Once in Rocky Point, either follow the numerous Tessoro signs marking various routes to our sales office, or continue straight down the road into town

Directions from San Diego
- If you come from Yuma, Calexico, Mexicali or surrounding areas, you have these 2 options:
- Take the International Highway #2 towards San Luis Rio Colorado. Pass by the toll gate ($12 pesos per car). Go straight approximately 300 yards towards San Luis R.C. until arriving at the customs broker (yellow office on the right side of the highway) and turn right.
- Continue straight about 1.88 miles (3 kms.) until the road sign – Photo 3– (Col. Hidalgo straight, San Luis R.C. Left), and turn Left before the waterway.
- TContinue about .6 miles (1 km) where the street turns right and ends at the stop sign.
- Turn Right into Av. Constitucion.
- As you turn into Av. Constitucion, there are 2 Pemex Gas Stations, excellent place to refill the tank!
- Continue on av. Constitution, it turns to the left, Keep on going. (If you need food or beverages, there is an Oxxo convenience store about 300 yards. after the gas stations).
- About 100 yards ahead, starts the highway to El Golfo de Santa Clara with an announcement of Feliz Viaje above the road
- Take the Second Street towards South, (it is the second traffic light after the toll house).
- Go straight on second street through 5 traffic lights: (Madero, Juárez, Hidalgo, Kino and Revolución), and a Stop sign (Carranza). The 6th. traffic light is av. Constitucion and is the only avenue in diagonal turn to the Right into Constitucion.
- Continue on av. Constitucion up to where you see the 2 gas stations (back to instruction e) about 1.8 miles (2,9 Kms.) from second street.
- PContinue on av. Constitution, it turns to the left, Keep on going. (If you need food or beverages, there is an Oxxo convenience store about 300 yards after the gas stations).
- About 100 yards ahead, starts the highway to El Golfo de Santa Clara with an announcement of Feliz Viaje above the road (back to instruction g).
- Continue on the highway, you are going to drive through several small towns and agricultural fields, be very cautious with slow vehicles like trucks and extra-wide tractors.
- TApproximately 23.1 miles (37 Kms.) ahead, you’ll arrive at the town of Riitos. Here the highway turns to the right 90 degrees, goes across of the railroad tracks and turns again 90 degrees to the left.
- Continue up to 62.5 mile approximately (100 Kms.), you’ll see the road sign that indicates the entrance to the coastal highway to Rocky Point.
- Turn to the left into the new coastal highway to Rocky Point, it’s in very good conditions, but BE CAREFUL, there are flaws like: I. The first 20 miles (32 kms) have very sharp curves, when windy, they’ll be covered with loose sand and they are not very well signalized.
II. There are Dips with no warnings and in some points the ascents do not allow you to see the curves that follow them. - About 82 miles (130 kms) later, you’ll se the road sign directing you to Laguna del Mar or Puerto Peñasco. Turn Left onto the cross road and go cautiously across the railroad tracks.
- Keep on going up to the traffic circle and turn right, go for a couple of miles and you’ll be entering Puerto Penasco (Rocky Point) on the main boulevard (Benito Juarez), moderate your speed and drive carefully.
